Painting with Natural Materials

Painting with Natural Materials

Students have been collecting and studying all kinds of natural materials.
For our art project we pretended we did not have any paintbrushes. We brainstormed materials we could use as replacements. Students drew, smeared, mixed and printed with the natural materials they found.
We used materials such as seed pods, sticks and leaves.
We hope you enjoy the results as much as we enjoyed creating them!

Art in Nature

As part of our Unit on 'Sharing the Planet' we have been learning about the art of Andy Goldsworthy. He creates work using only natural materials and tools that he finds at the scene. We created work in this style using materials we collected here at school.

Cia dos Bichos

Field Trip to Cia dos Bichos

Last week students from both campuses got together at “Cia. dos Bichos” to enjoy an adventurous day at the farm. As we got there, each class was assigned to a different monitor, and off they went! We had a great day of hands-on experiences related to what we have been learning about in the classroom.

The children learnt about the habits of different farm animals, such as goats, chickens, ducks and so on. They fed these animals and were able to pet them. The highlight of our field trip was milking a cow.

In the end of our trip, some students were so tired from all the fun they had in the farm, that they took a nap in the bus on the way back to school.

We created folders with all pictures from each class and an extra
album with pictures taken by Mr. Smith.

📷 Enjoy them 😁

Halloween

Halloween at St.Francis!

Last Monday our school celebrated Halloween and PYP 2 had so much fun! Children came in wearing different kinds of costumes. They went trick-or-treating in Mrs. Hazell’s office and got some candies. After that they came back to the classroom and made some Halloween crafts. It was a creepy and fun success! Take a look at the pictures!

Jolly Phonics

Working with letters and their sounds
Here at St Francis we use various resources and one of them is Jolly Phonics.

Jolly Phonics is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children and teachers, who can see their students achieve. The letter sounds are split into seven groups as shown below.
We are currently finishing the work with the third group of sounds. While we introduce the songs and review the sounds, we also work with differentiated language activities in the classroom, including short phonetic words (CVC) and common words (sight words).

Here are the students singing their favourite Jolly Phonics songs:

Sharing the Planet

PYP 2 is starting a new Unit of Inquiry. We will work on an inquiry into living things`s needs and their interdependence.

Lines of Inquiry:

-The characteristics of living things and things that were never alive.
-The needs of plants and animals, including humans.
- The importance and ways of caring for living things.

In this Unit we will visit a mini farm and will be studying living things in class.

Feel free to bring in seeds or living things you discover.
It might even be possible to arrange a pet visit. Talk to your class teacher.

Here are some online games related to our central idea:

In the style of Mondrian

PYP 2 learned about a Dutch artist called Piet Mondrian. They listened to the story of his life and how he developed his own painting style. After that they got inspired by him and made their own drawings and paintings!Take a look at our artists!

In Maths we are learning to use mathematical language involved in measuring. In Piet Mondrian's works we can see rectangles that are longer, shorter, narrower and wider than others.

In class we created our own "Mondrians" using black tape and paint (this activity was done two weeks ago and it was optional) and as a group we all created a Mondrian panel.

 OUR MASTER PIECE!

PYP 2 Omega

In Omega we learned about Mondrian and how he worked with representational art before transitioning to more abstract arts. We used a variety of materials and techniques to create self-portraits and abstract paintings inspired by real scenes.
